This thesis investigated the block copolymer (BCP) thin film characteristics and pattern formation using a set of predetermined molecular weights of PS-b-PMMA and PS-b-PDMS. Post BCP pattern fabrication on the required base substrate a dry plasma etch process was utilised for successful pattern transfer of the BCP resist onto underlying substrate. The resultant sub-10 nm device features were used in front end of line (FEoL) fabrication of active device components in integrated circuits (IC). The potential use of BCP templates were further extended to metal and metal-oxide nanowire fabrication. These nanowires were further investigated in real-time applications as novel sensors and supercapacitors.

In this work. Sub-micrometre thick CulnSe2 films were prepared using different techniques viz, selenization through chemically deposited Selenium and Sequential Elemental Evaporation. These methods are simpler than co-evaporation technique, which is known to be the most suitable one for CulnSe2 preparation. The films were optimized by varying the composition over a wide range to find optimum properties for device fabrication. Typical absorber layer thickness of today's solar cell ranges from 2-3m. Thinning of the absorber layer is one of the challenges to reduce the processing time and material usage, particularly of Indium. Here we made an attempt to fabricate solar cell with absorber layer of thickness

Many of the conducting polymers though having good material property are not solution processable. Hence an alternate method of fabrication of film by pulsed laser deposition, was explored in this work. PDTCPA, a donor-acceptor-donor type of polymer having absorption from 900 nm to 300 nm was deposited by both UV and IR laser to understand the effect of deposition parameters on the film quality. It was observed that the laser ablation of PDTCPA doesn't alter its chemical structure hence retaining the chemical integrity of the polymer. Microscopic studies of the ablated film shows that the IR laser ablated films were particulate in nature while UV laser ablated films are deposited as smooth continuous layer. The morphology of the film influences its electrical characteristics as current-voltage characteristic of these films shows that films deposited by UV laser are p rectifying while those by IR laser are more of resistor in nature.

1.6-1.7 mu m highly strained InGaAs/InGaAsP distributed feedback lasers was grown and fabricated by low pressure mentalorganic chemical vapor deposition. High quality highly strained InGaAs/InP materials were obtained by using strain buffer layer. Four pairs of highly strained quantum wells were used in the devices and carrier blocking layer was used to improve the temperature characteristics of the devices. The uncoated 1.66 mu m and 1.74 mu m lasers with ridge wave guide 3 mu m wide have low threshold current (< 15mA) and high output power (> 14mW at 100mA). In the temperature range from 10 degrees C to 40 degrees C, the characteristic temperature T-0 of the 1.74 mu m laser is 57K, which is comparable to that of the 1.55 mu m-wavelength InGaAsP/InP-DFB laser.

Material growth and device fabrication of the first 1.3μm quantum well (QW) edge emitting laser diodes in China are reported. Through the optimization of the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth conditions and the tuning of the indium and nitrogen composition of the GalnNAs QWs, the emission wavelengths of the QWs can be tuned to 1.3μm. Ridge geometry waveguide laser diodes are fabricated. The lasing wavelength is 1.3μm under continuous current injection at room temperature with threshold current of 1kA/cm^2 for the laser diode structures with the cleaved facet mirrors. The output light power over 30mW is obtained.

As emphasis towards sustainable and Renewable energy resources grows world-wide,interest in the capture and use of solar energy is increasing dramatically.Solar cells have been known and used for many years, but depletion of conventional energy resources resulted in the intensification of research on solar cells leading to new design and technique of fabrication. The current emphasis is directed towards high effiency inexpensive solar cells. This thesis includes deposition and characterization of CuInS2 and In2S3 thin films using chemical Spray Pyrolysis(CSP) technique. The optimum condition for these films to be used as absorber and buffer layer respectively in solar cells were thus found out.Solar cell with the stucture,ITO/CuInS2/In2S3/metal electrode was fabricated using these well-characterized films, which yielded an efficiency of 9.5%.

As the area of nanotechnology continues to grow, the development of new nanomaterials with interesting physical and electronic properties and improved characterization techniques are several areas of research that will be remain vital for continued improvement of devices and the understanding in nanoscale phenomenon. In this dissertation, the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of rare earth (RE) compounds is described in detail. In general, the procedure involves the vaporization of a REClx (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho) in the presence of hydride phase precursors such as decaborane and ammonia at high temperatures and low pressures. The vapor-liquid-solid mechanism was used in combination with the chemical vapor deposition process to synthesize single crystalline rare earth hexaboride nanostructures. The crystallographic orientation of as-synthesized rare earth hexaboride nanostructures and gadolinium nitride thin films was controlled by judicious choice of specific growth substrates and modeled by analyzing x-ray diffraction powder patterns and crystallographic models. The rare earth hexaboride nanostructures were then implemented into two existing technologies to enhance their characterization capabilities. First, the rare earth hexaboride nanowires were used as a test material for the development of a TEM based local electrode atom probe tomography (LEAP) technique. This technique provided some of the first quantitative compositional information of the rare earth hexaboride systems. Second, due to the rigidity and excellent conductivity of the rare earth hexaborides, nanostructures were grown onto tungsten wires for the development of robust, oxidation resistant nanomanipulator electronic probes for semiconductor device failure analysis.

The optical layouts incorporating binary phase diffractive grating and a standard micro-objective were used for femtosecond microfabrication of periodical structures in fused silica. Two beams, generated in Talbot type interferometer, interfered on a surface and in the bulk of the sample. The method suggested allows better control over the transverse size of the grating pitch, and thus control the reflection strength of the waveguide or fibre grating. We present the examples of direct inscription of the sub-micrometer periodical structures using a 267 nm femtosecond laser radiation.

Microfabrication of photonic devices by means of femtosecond (fs) laser pulses is reviewed. Adaptive modeling of fs laser pulse propagation was performed for detailed study of different regimes. Submicron structures are demonstrated in both infrared and UV ranges. Applications to fibre based devices and prototype integrated planar devices are discussed. © 2007 Optical Society of America.
